Encountering her Elvira again in Florence, eleven years after 2015, brought to the fore an extraordinary artistic evolution: both as an interpreter, who needs very little to convey an intention or an emotion, and as a peerless vocalist—technically the non plus ultra, the best one could possibly imagine for Bellini. To give just one example, the variations, evidently worked out with the conductor, were full of taste, so that their pyrotechnic effect went hand in hand with exquisite nuances of phrasing and accent, always rich, carefully considered and internalised before being projected towards the audience. Portrayals of “madness” can sometimes lack credibility; with Pratt, however, Elvira immediately acquires a tragic depth that is even true to life, lost in a seamless oscillation between fear, disappointment and madness.

La regina della serata, non soltanto della notte, è Jessica Pratt. Quasi dispiace che Mozart riservi alla perfida Astrifiammante solamente due arie e poche battute nel finale secondo, perché il soprano canta magnificamente e incarna alla perfezione la regalità maligna del personaggio. Pur avendo consuetudine con le eroine tragiche del belcanto, Pratt affronta con naturalezza il tedesco e il Singspiel mozartiano. I recitativi sono scanditi con voce ampia e penetrante, mentre le arie colpiscono come lame nella grande sala viennese. È soprattutto nella celeberrima “Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen”, nel secondo atto, che Pratt offre il meglio di sé tra colorature e sovracuti perfetti per intonazione e luminosità (nonostante i tempi serrati staccati in buca), che fanno della prova un trionfo virtuosistico. Colpisce anche la finezza interpretativa dell’accento sull’ultimo sovracuto, prima di riprendere la linea del canto. Entrambe le arie vengono salutate da vere e proprie acclamazioni trionfali. Meritatissime.
Jessica Pratt confirms herself as one of the greatest Queens of the Night of our time. Her coloratura is of almost unreal precision, the high notes flawlessly placed, brilliant, and never merely athletic. Most striking of all, however, is her ability to transform two arias so often reduced to mere vocal showpieces into genuine moments of musical theatre. “O zittre nicht” becomes the restrained lament of a wounded sovereign rather than that of a desperate mother, while “Der Hölle Rache” erupts with astonishing icy authority and regal fury.
Likewise, the highly acclaimed bel canto soprano Jessica Pratt, as the Queen of the Night, ignited fireworks of rare brilliance.
An exciting debut awaits in 2027! It marks the beginning of a journey through Donizetti’s three iconic Tudor operas, which we’ll bring to life over the coming years with the wonderful Teatro del Maggio Michele Spotti

2027 marks the 20th anniversary of my operatic debut as Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor. Over the past two decades, the role has been a constant companion, with an average of at least two productions every year.
The lights went out when the first act of the new production of Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail was not even an hour old. Perhaps it had been the extraordinary, sad beauty of Jessica Pratt's “Ach ich liebte” that overwhelmed the notoriously sensitive French grid. And then, miraculously, when it was turned back on, her “Martern aller Arten” lit up the sky. Blazing, pure, profoundly expressive and topped by a cadenza that landed like a revelation. The grid held. There are evenings when a single aria justifies the existence of opera as an art form, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées as a building and Paris as a city. This was one of them.
